Kabeer is on cloud nine after getting a dream debut in Malayalam film music
“I’m living a dream…,” gushes Kabeer over the phone from Abu Dhabi, the excitement palpable in his voice.
The reason for his exhilaration is the rave reviews for his song Pathinezhinte Poonkaralin… in Akku Akbar’s Vellaripravinte Changathi. The debutant playback singer is on song.
“Singing for the Mohan Sithara-Vayalar Sarat Chandra Varma combination and that too with Shreya Ghosal; the song is a hit and media is writing about me… What more can I ask for?” says Kabeer, a native of Thalikkulam in Thrissur, who has been living abroad for the last two decades.
A trained singer who learnt classical music from Thrissur R. Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Kabeer is a B-grade artiste (in light music) of All India Radio.
However, Kabeer is no newcomer to the music industry. “I used to sing for many stage programmes, both at home and in Abu Dhabi,” says the singer,
He adds: “I nurtured a wish to sing a composition by ONV (ONV Kurup) sir and to sing that along with K.S. Chitra. I conveyed my wish in a letter to ONV sir, and met him. Eventually, I did sing with Chitra in the album Rithumangalam.”
Vellaripravinte… landed in Kabeer’s kitty because of its director Akku Akbar, his childhood friend. “After studies, we parted ways – he went into movies and I flew to the Gulf,” says Kabeer who stays with his wife, Rejna, and children, Anees and Nisa, in Abu Dhabi. But their friendship survived the distance and the passage of time. “Although I wanted to do playback singing, I never asked him for a chance and he had his limitations as well. We both waited for the right time. As Vellaripravinte… is set in the sixties, he thought my voice and style would suit the songs and took me to meet Mohan Sithara,” says Kabeer. The singer has already recorded another song for Mohan Sithara, for an untitled movie.
