Bhubaneswar: Renowned playback singer Asha Bhosle has been selected for the prestigious Akshaya Mohanty
Samman for 2011 in recognition of her outstanding contribution in the field of music.
The award comprising a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a special letter of appreciation would be presented at a function here on October 12, the birth anniversary of legendary Oriya singer and musician Akshaya Mohanty.
Announcing this here today, Akashya Mohanty Foundation, which gives away the award, said that earlier recipients of the Samman include Manna Dey, Shri Gulzar Shri Ilayaraja.
Born on September 8, 1933, Asha Bhosle is one of the best-known and most highly-regarded Hindi playback singers in India. She has done playback singing for over a thousand Bollywood movies.
In addition, she has recorded several private albums and participated in numerous solo concerts in India and abroad. She is the sister of leading playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Renowned for her voice range and often credited for her versatility, Bhosle’s work includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian classical music, folk songs, qawwalis.
Apart from Hindi, she has sung in over 18 Indian and foreign languages.
