John Keay’s India: A History is a probing and provocative chronicle of five thousand years of South Asian history, from the first Harrapan settlements on the banks of the Indus River to the recent nuclear-arms race. In a tour de force of narrative history, Keay blends together insights from a variety of scholarly fields and weaves them together to chart the evolution of the rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and peoples that makes up the modern nations of Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. Keay, as is common of his historical writing fails uttering in this survey. If you are honestly interested in the subject try Sugrata Bose’s Modern South Asia. This book is tainted by the authors affair with Hoary History

  2. Any serious student of Indian history will tell you that the book lacks a lot on presenting any factual data/information to support its claims and is more a repetition of a lot of disproved myths about Indian History. Especially, the mention of the obsolete Aryan Invasion Theory of India shows that there was no major effort to research the facts before publishing.

Keays… is no doubt an accomplished author, historian.. that has brought a detailed, and rich view of India’s history..

This however, has been tarnished, with the continuing affirmation of the Aryan/Euro invasion of India..

I really hope that he does a revised edition to this book that will account for the emerging view of India’s REAL non-Aryan history.

  4. Keay’s book is an excellent history. India’s past is very complex, going

way back. If I go to India, I’ll bring INDIA: A HISTORY along as a reference. It’s probably the best.

We despair of the coming of a writer who will present India with a full command of the Indian texts and the new archaeological finds. Keay has failed us like the previous authors weaned on the colonialist school of historiography. The tone is set by the unfortunate repetition by Keay of the now discredited Aryan invasion theory (see the recent books by Kenoyer, Gupta, and Lal for the archaelogical findings establishing a continuity that goes back to 6500 BC). I hope the author will soon bring out a revised and corrected version of this book.
