If you cannot stop humming Chammak Challo, then don’t sweat. The song has been topping charts for weeks now and the artistes are basking in the success.
Along with Akon, you cannot miss the melodious, yet assertive voice and that is Hamsika Iyer. The chirpy and effervescent singer believes in taking things easy and doing quality work above anything else.
Hamsika is not new to the glamour world. She has participated in the Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge and Close Up Antakshari, has sung for ads and serials as well. Her claim to fame was the song Chanda Re from Eklavya.
So how did Chammak Challo happen? “I was sitting at home one day and Vishal (Dadlani) called me. At first I thought it was a Tamil song. When he told me it’s for Ra.One and that I’ll be singing along with Akon, I was totally speechless,” says Hamsika.
Not many know that Hamsika and Akon never recorded the song together. She laughs and admits, “Yes, Akon’s portions were recorded much earlier. I do wish playback singers can record songs, especially duets together. The chemistry really comes out in the song and as a singer, you feel more competitive and challenged.”
Being a multi-lingual singer has benefits and Hamsika could not agree more. She has sung in Kannada, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu as well.
“I sang Ninagende Vishesha with Kunal Ganjawala for the Kannada film Prithvi. Diction and pronunciation is as important as having a good voice as it really brings out the emotion in a song. Shreya Ghoshal is probably the most versatile singer we have today.”
In an age of electronically enhanced music, do tunes appeal to her as much? “I really miss live musicians, and I feel that is a mark of true musical finesse. Such ensembles also showcase hidden talent. It’s absolutely magical to be a part of such a troupe.” This is why Hamsika feels The Dewarists is a ‘divine’ concept and can’t get enough of it.
“I love that show! The anticipation, anxiety and suspense of working with new musicians clearly shows in the quality of music.”
After delivering a chartbuster, one would imagine Hamsika’s phone ringing off the hook.
“No one has called me so far! But I’m sure they will eventually. I am a very relaxed person and my friends tell me I’m not cut out for Bollywood. I’d much rather sing only 10 songs in my career but they should be memorable and evergreen,” she adds.
